The Carleton University Survey Centrewas established in 1978 primarily as aquality polling service for the newsmedia. While the research activities ofthe centre have expanded in recent years,a tradition of election polling hascontinued, with the centre conductingpolls in past federal elections for CBCtelevision and Southam News.

As the centre has grown, the scope ofits survey services has expanded to covera range of different research projectsincluding national, provincial, regionaland local-level surveys as well asacademic surveys for various governmentand public bodies on social and publicpolicy matters. The centre'sparticipation in the ISSP reflects itsgrowing interest in cross-nationalcomparative data and analysis, as do itsmost recent publications.
